4.3.6 : Voluntary Use Of Drug Screening/Breathalyzer For Health and Safety Concerns And Violations Of Conduct
Greenville University policies prohibit the possession, consumption, or distribution of alcohol while enrolled at GU. On occasion, students may be found in a situation where alcohol is present. This may occur while visiting in other student’s rooms, common areas, or other properties on campus. To evaluate if a Greenville University student may be a health or safety risk due to the amount of alcohol consumed, the Department of Campus Safety maintains a portable Breathalyzer unit. On campus, a test may be administered by a Campus Safety Officer or the Director of Community Standards and Campus Safety at the discretion of the responding Campus Safety employee. Residential Life staff will NOT administer Breathalyzer tests. Students may be asked to voluntary submit to a Breathalyzer test to demonstrate they have not been consuming alcohol, assess their need for potential medical treatment, or assess their fitness to travel. Students found in the presence of alcohol may request an immediate breathalyzer test to establish their innocence from consumption. Students found in the presence of illegal or illicit drugs or generating multiple reports of potential drug usage may appear in person at the HSHS Health Clinic within 24 hours of the incident and request a drug screening to establish their innocence from consumption. Results should be submitted to the Director of Community Standards and Campus Safety.
Campus Safety staff may offer or inform students of the Breathalyzer or drug screening options as a courtesy, but it is the responsibility of each individual to request a Breathalyzer test or initiate a drug screening at the campus clinic. Any student may refuse a request to take a breathalyzer or submit to a drug screening, however, conduct hearing officers will have no other way to differentiate between complicity and consumption. Students who submit to a Breathalyzer test will not be charged with consumption of alcohol if they establish (.00) test results. Campus Safety will maintain a complete policy on the use of the portable Breathalyzer as part of their Standard Operation Procedures. Any results of Breathalyzer tests will not be shared with local police departments unless court ordered. Non-students/guests will not be offered a test and are the responsibility of the student they are visiting.
