Secondary Education, Bachelor of Science
The secondary education major is designed to prepare individuals to teach high school, grades 9-12. Student will choose an area of concentration to complete as part of the major. Concentration areas include: Biology, Chemistry, English Language Arts, History, Mathematics, and Physics. The program requires the completion of 51 professional education credits and 32-52 concentration credits. Students completing this major are eligible for the bachelor of science degree.
A teacher candidate pursuing a secondary education major may choose to also complete an additional major in their content area (i.e. biology, chemistry, English, history, mathematics, or physics). Additional coursework will be required to complete the content area major.

Selection of a Concentration
Biology Concentration
Secondary Education Biology majors are encouraged to serve at least one semester as a laboratory assistant.
Students must only complete three credits of
PHYS 102;
PHYS 102L is optional for students completing the biology concentration.
Chemistry Concentration
Students interested in earning a dual license in Secondary Education Chemistry and Middle Grades Education Science should complete the courses above, along with
BIOL 108 Environmental Science and Stewardship or
BIOL 112 General Biology II. An additional content test will be required.
English Language Arts Concentration
Students interested in earning a dual license in Secondary Education English Language Arts and Middle Grades Education Literacy & Language Arts should complete the courses above and
EDUC 431 Middle Grades English Language Arts Methods. An additional content test will be required.
History Concentration
Students interested in earning a dual license in Secondary Education History and Middle Grades Education Social Studies should complete the courses above and
EDUC 432 Middle Grades Social Science Methods. An additional content test will be required.
Mathematics Concentration
Students interested in earning a dual license in Secondary Education Mathematics and Middle Grades Education Mathematics should complete the courses above and
EDUC 472 Middle Grades Mathematics Methods. An additional content test will be required.
Physics Concentration
PHYS 399 Lab Assistant (2 cr)
Students interested in earning a dual license in Secondary Education Physics and Middle Grades Education Science should complete the courses above and BIOL 145 Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology. An additional content test will be required.
Secondary Education Physics majors may complete 16 additional mathematics credits to earn a high school mathematics endorsement. The required courses are:
In addition to the major requirements listed above, students will need to complete a general education curriculum and elective courses to earn 120 credits which is mandatory for earning a Greenville University degree. Details about the general education curriculum can be found in the Academic Information section of this catalog. Some general education requirements are met through required major courses which reduces the number of required general education credits. Students should work closely with their advisor to put together an academic plan to make sure all degree requirements are met in a timely manner.
