Student Admissions Policy and Requirements

Greenville University admits students who desire to achieve a liberal arts education in an evangelical Christian context. Members of this community are either committed to Christ or are sympathetic to the Christian perspective.

Admission to Greenville University is competitive.  Applicants are evaluated on their academic record,  references, interviews, and participation in extracurricular activities. To be considered for admission to Greenville University, prospective students must submit the following:

1. A completed application form, including full responses to the application essays
2. Official transcripts from high school and/or from any college previously attended (Students who have earned dual credit in high school need to request that their college transcript be sent to Greenville University.)

NOTE: Results of the GED (General Education Development) high school equivalency test are required for students not having graduated from high school.

NOTE: All International students are required to submit TOEFL scores. 

Academic and personal references may also be requested. Students are encouraged to submit additional documentation they deem helpful and insightful to their application process. High school students are welcome to apply for admission beginning the summer after their junior year.

Greenville University welcomes home school applicants. Requirements for admission and the application process are the same as that described above. In lieu of “official” high school transcripts, documentation of completed high school coursework will be accepted.

The Admissions Office reviews each file individually, so all students who desire to study at Greenville University should complete the application process.  However, the Greenville University Faculty have established guidelines by which admission decisions are generally made, which are:

Admissions Criteria - Freshmen

1. College preparatory curriculum completed in high school (While an exact course distribution is not required, the University recommends that applicants have four years of English, two years of foreign language, one year each of algebra and geometry, one year of a laboratory science, and one year of American history.)
2. High school GPA of 2.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale

Freshman applicants who do not meet the above criteria may still be admitted to Greenville University by special action of the Admissions Committee.  These students will be required to participate in an academic program that promotes collegiate academic success as a condition of their enrollment.  Satisfactory completion of this program is required for continuing enrollment.

Admissions Criteria - Transfers

1. College/university GPA of 2.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale

2. Completion of at least 12 transferable credits

NOTE: If a student has completed fewer than 30 college credits, then the high school record and test scores are also used to determine admission.

Transfer students with less than a 2.2 GPA in their previous collegiate coursework may be admitted on academic probation by special action of the Admissions Committee if there is reason to expect an improvement in academic performance. 

Undocumented students (a foreign national who entered the United States without inspection or with fraudulent documentation or entered as a nonimmigrant with proper documentation but then overstated the terms of his/her status and remained in the United States without authorization) may apply to Greenville University.  Only the documentation requested above will be required.

Past low academic achievement will not be weighed negatively for veterans of the United States armed forces and other mature students who have been out of school for several years. 

Greenville University is a Christian university of liberal arts and sciences. The University provides faculty, staff, and students a place where living and learning can be experienced in a Christ-centered environment. While the University does not require students to be Christians, students should attend Greenville only if they are interested in pursuing higher education within a Christ-centered community. Prospective students should also be completely comfortable abiding by our lifestyle statement.

Greenville University admits students on a rolling basis, so there is no specific application deadline. Students receive notification of admission within two weeks after their admission file is complete. The Admissions Committee reserves the right to request a personal, on-campus interview with an applicant before making the final admissions decision.

Applicants will be expected to pay a $200 Tuition Deposit after notification of acceptance. The deposit is fully refundable until May 1 for students applying for fall semester, and December 1 for students applying for Interterm or spring semester. The deposit confirms the student’s intention to enroll in the University, reserves a place for the student in the student body, and provides the student the opportunity to schedule for classes.

Greenville University has the right to refuse admission or readmission for any student at its discretion. The college does not discriminate in its educational programs or activities on the basis of handicap, race, creed, color, sex or national origin which is in full compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the laws of the State of Illinois.
