HIST 325 History of Slavery in the United States

A survey of African and African-American slavery in the United States beginning primarily in the 17th century. The course explores the international slave trade, the intersection of slavery and race, colonial slave markets, the relationship between colonial and American legal codes and slavery, black protest, and abolitionism and emancipation. Additional areas considered may include the idea of race, slavery and the Enlightenment, and antebellum paternalism.
