EDUC 542 Cultural Awareness in the Classroom

The purpose of this course is to explore the ways in which culture and language impacts the classroom environment.  Differing cultural expectations, in addition to differing language abilities, can influence the effectiveness of teaching and learning.

As we examine variables that contribute to challenges in teaching and learning in diverse settings, we will explore culturally responsive teaching strategies to support multilingual learners.  We will seek best practices for education that takes place in underserved (often urban) areas, many of which are in the nation's most multi-cultural and poverty-stricken settings.  We will also examine the biases and cultural blind spots that hinder effective teaching amongst diverse populations.

Readings, discussions, and activities will explore strategies to overcome obstacles that occur when there are linguistic and cultural differences between teachers and students.  We will discuss language development, support systems, discipline, instructional methodology, and interactions with parents and the local community.
