ICE AGES AND GLACIATION
Outside of the movies, most students have little understanding of ice ages; the most recent was approximately 110,000-120,000 years ago. In this course, the teacher will explore the research and thought surrounding the geologic events we now call ice ages. The teacher will also learn the historical impact of glacial events on the Earth’s climate, geography, and wildlife. In this course, the teacher will gain a comprehensive understanding of the changes to the Earth that resulted from ice ages, including continental restructuring and the now extinct wildlife of North America.
This course equips the teacher with concrete, actionable strategies for teaching students about the development of scientific thought in the 18th-20th centuries, the major scientists and their contributions to our understanding of ice ages, debates about the causes of glaciation, and changes to existing glaciation due to climate change. By the end of this course, the teacher will have strategies for engaging students in the history of the Earth’s climate and geology.
