JOURNALING AND CREATIVE WRITING IN THE ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM
Journal and creative writing in the classroom provide valuable skills for students’ academic and personal growth. A successful journal and creative writing program boosts students’ capacity for self-reflection and creativity; enhances their ability to organize thoughts and communicate clearly; and improves grammar, vocabulary, and syntax skills. Journal and creative writing entries also provide the teacher with insight into how his or her students think, feel, and express themselves, enhancing the teacher’s ability to approach and teach students in a way that meets their individual needs.
This course will provide the teacher with the knowledge and strategies to create and implement a robust journal and creative writing program across a variety of genres, including non-fiction, fantasy and adventure; help students build capacity in using literary conventions; and engage students in visual/kinesthetic learning. After taking the course, the teacher will be able to design an effective, successful journal-writing program to help all students thrive. This course is applicable for all classroom teachers both in Common Core or non-Common Core aligned states.
