Degree Requirements when Transferring from a Closed Institution

It is unfortunate when an institution of higher education must close.  Greenville University desires to help students who were enrolled at a school that closed earn their bachelor's degree.  Therefore, GU has approved modified bachelor's degree requirements to accommodate these students.

To earn a bachelor's degree at Greenville University, a student coming from an institution that has closed1 will fulfill the following requirements.

  1. Complete a minimum of 120 credits. These credits consist of courses fulfilling general education and major requirements and may include electives as well. Depending upon the choice of major, students may graduate with more than 120 credits.
  2. Complete the general education requirements. Requirements vary slightly depending on the degree being sought and the number of credits the student is transferring to GU.
    1. Students transferring in 110 or more credits will not need to meet any of the Greenville University general education requirements.
    2. Students transferring in 90 or more credits will:
      1. Follow the GE requirements for students with an associates degree,
      2. Choose either THEO 310 or UNIV 301,
      3. Complete EXPF 320,
      4. Complete the upper division writing intensive course, and
      5. Have the global foundations requirement waived.
    3. Students transferring in 80-89.5 credits will:
      1. Follow the GE requirements for students with an associates degree.
    4. Students transferring in 70-79.5 credits will:
      1. Follow GE requirements for those with 60 or more credits, but without an associates degree,
      2. Choose to complete either a lab science or a social science, and
      3. Only need to complete two humanities courses if pursuing a bachelor of arts degree
    5. Students transferring 60-69.5 credits will:
      1. Follow GE requirements for those with 60 or more credits, but without an associates degree.
    6. Students transferring in less than 60 credits will:
      1. Follow the GE requirements for those of new or transfer students arriving at GU with fewer than 60 credits.
  3. Complete the requirements for an academic major. At least eight credits in the major must be upper division. See specific majors for the number of credits required. Transfer credits may fulfill major and upper division requirements.
  4. Complete a minimum of 30 upper division credits. Upper division credits are those numbered 300 and above. Upper division credits will be accepted in transfer.
  5. Fulfill the residency requirement.
    1. Students with 110 or more transferrable credits will only need to complete requirements for a major.  There will be no minimum credit requirement.
    2. Students with 109 or fewer transferrable credits will need to complete a minimum of 18 credits at Greenville University to earn a degree. Students will complete six credits of general education plus 12 of the major credits (which must include the upper division writing intensive course) at GU. Students will be able to transfer in all academically qualified courses and will only need to complete enough courses at GU to meet the degree requirements (in this policy).  The 90-credit transfer limit will not apply. 
    3. The residency requirement for minors will be waived for all students with 60 or more transferrable credits.(GU will only be able to document minors that are published in its catalog.)
  6. Earn a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2.00. Whereas all coursework taken while enrolled at Greenville University is included in the cumulative GPA, transfer and off-campus semester coursework is not calculated into the cumulative GPA.
  7. Earn a minimum GPA of 2.0 within the student’s chosen major. (Teacher education majors must have a minimum major GPA of 2.75.) The minimum GPA is also required for students opting to complete a minor.
  8. Submit a graduation application.  Applications are due for December and January graduates by the first day of the fall semester.  May and August graduates must submit their application no later than the first day of the spring semester.  Earlier submission of graduation applications is recommended.

 

1 The institution must have closed within two years of student enrolling at Greenville University, and this policy only applies to students who enroll at GU following attendance at a closed institution.  Students who enroll at another school between the closed institution and Greenville University or sat out of school for more than two years before enrolling at GU will be required to meet the graduation requirements of a typical transfer student.
