Middle Grades Education, Bachelor of Science
The
middle grades education major is designed to prepare individuals to teach grades five through eight. Students will choose at least one area of concentration to complete as part of the major. Concentration areas include: Literacy and Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science. The program requires the completion of 51 professional education credits and a minimum of 24 concentration credits. Students completing this major are eligible for the Bachelor of Science degree.

Science (Biology) Concentration
The following content and methods courses will be completed by students who are completing both the Middle Grades: Science and Secondary Education: Biology majors.
Science (Chemistry) Concentration
The following content and methods courses will be completed by students who are completing both the Middle Grades: Science and Secondary Education: Chemistry majors.
Social Science Concentration
Middle grades education majors wishing to earn dual licensure with LBS1 will need to take EDUC 312 in place of EDUC 316 and may substitute EDUC 401 for EDUC 409 and EDUC 410.
Middle grades education majors wishing to earn dual licensure with elementary education will need to take EDUC 312 in place of EDUC 316 and EDUC 401 instead of EDUC 409 and EDUC 410.
An additional content test will be required for dual licensure.
In addition to the major requirements listed above, students will need to complete a general education curriculum and elective courses to earn 120 credits which is mandatory for earning a Greenville University degree. Details about the general education curriculum can be found in the Academic Information section of this catalog. Some general education requirements are met through required major courses which reduces the number of required general education credits. Students should work closely with their advisor to put together an academic plan to make sure all degree requirements are met in a timely manner.
