Master of Arts in Education Program
The master of arts in education program is designed for teachers and others who wish to continue their professional development by earning an advanced degree and/or completing an additional endorsement. Admission is contingent upon graduation from an accredited institution of higher learning.
Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the master of arts in education program, an applicant is required to submit:
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited undergraduate institution.
- A completed Greenville University graduate program application.
- Official transcripts from all previously attended educational institutions.
- Copies of all currently held teacher certificates required for licensure programs.
- A written statement of educational philosophy.
Types of Admission
- Full Admission: Student has met all requirements. All students seeking licensure must be admitted to the program by the Committee on Teacher Education (COTE).
- Provisional Admission: Students who have completed all other admissions requirements and have a cumulative grade point average of less than 3.0 are admitted on a provisional status. Students must earn a “B” or higher in the first two courses to be removed from the provisional status and be fully admitted. Students in the reading program must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5
Transfer Credit
Students may apply to transfer or substitute a maximum of 6 credits into the Master of Arts program from other institutions or Greenville University programs
- Earned at least a B in the course
- The course was completed at an accredited institution
- The course was taken at the 400 or above level
- The course corresponds to the specific course under consideration in content and minimum credits,
- The course was not part of the student’s undergraduate degree,
- Undergraduate Greenville credits are counted as transfer and subject to the limit, and
- Was completed within the past five years.
All students will be required to do field experience hours for all classes that are transferred in from another institution if no documentation exists supporting field experience in the class or if the documentation does not specifically match Greenville University field experience requirements. These field experiences will require an additional fee. The required number of field hours for each course must be met thus, those transferring in field hours may be required to complete additional hours to meet the required field hours for a course. Applications for transfer credits must be approved by graduate academic advisors.
Degree Requirements
The Master of Arts degree in the Teaching program consists of a 30-35 semester hour program. Students completing the Reading endorsement must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 while students completing any of the other Master of Arts majors must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 to remain in their program.
Programs leading to licensure must be completed within five years of matriculation. If more time lapses, the student may need to repeat or take additional courses to meet state standards.

Candidates seeking Illinois licensure must take EDUC595 Practicum for one credit.

18 hours of additional coursework in an endorsement area must be completed to satisfy State of Illinois regulations for middle school endorsement.
