2022-2023 Undergraduate Catalog

CHEM Introduction to Chemistry (w/Lab) CHEM 106

Chemistry touches our lives every day whether we realize it or not. If you’ve ever made ice cubes, teared up while chopping onions, or tried to get a stain out of clothing, you experienced the principles of chemistry—and knowing the foundations of these principles will only help you better understand the world around you.

In this course, you’ll see how many of the common events that take place around you are processes of chemistry. Through an exploration into the language, systems, and mechanisms of chemistry, you’ll learn about the nature of matter, atomic structure, the periodic table of elements, chemical equations, gas laws, aqueous systems, reactions, compounds, and solutions. You’ll also become a mad scientist with everyday household items. You’ll discover the density of liquid in your kitchen, test chemical reactions with sugar, sand, and rubbing alcohol, demonstrate the behavior of gases, and much more.

By the end of the course, you’ll have not only a strong foundation in chemistry, but also analytical problem solving and reasoning skills that will serve you well in any profession.
