HIST 120 East Asian Civilization

Asian history dates back over 4,000 years. China, the oldest sustained civilization in the world and the other countries of Asia namely Mongolia, Korea, Japan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, India and the Malay Archipelago-modern day Indonesia and the Philippines developed technological innovation, rich cultures, languages and traditions that would shape the entire world. From sea voyages of discovery to great empires of Conquest, the history of East Asia is in fact the history of the foundation of the modern world. This course will explore the cultural, political, economic and historical developments of East Asia that shaped the history of the countries of East Asia from their ancient beginnings to modern times. By examining how the countries of East Asia evolved, this course will help learners gain a deeper understanding of how the developed and their impact on world civilization as a whole and will develop the ability to assess historical information, make connections and comparisons in the trends of historical events and use such knowledge to predict future developments in political, social, cultural and economic spheres.
