Guidelines and Procedures for Field Experience

The Greenville University student is responsible for fulfilling all requirements, schedules, and obligations pertinent to field experiences, whether imposed by the school, the cooperating teacher, or the School of Education.

1. Candidates will observe customary professional standards regarding promptness when meeting with school personnel and pupils.

2. Candidates will observe customary professional standards regarding dress when meeting with school personnel and pupils.

3. Candidates will check in at the office immediately upon their arrival. This will continue to be the customary procedure for each visit unless the building principal or teacher tells the student otherwise.

4. Candidates will give sufficient advance notice to their mentoring teacher when they are unable to be at their placement (illness or extreme extenuating circumstance). If a candidate is unable to be at their placement, it is their responsibility to contact the mentoring teacher and make arrangements to make up that time.

5. Candidates will be active participants in the classroom.

6. Candidates will follow the rules of the building to which they have been assigned. For example, public schools do not allow pupils or school personnel to eat during class or wear a hat.

7. Candidates will keep track of their hours using the electronic logs through Watermark Student Learning & Licensure. Candidates will complete log hours for host teachers and supervisors to approve or deny. These hours will be monitored by the Director of Field Experiences and Clinical Practice.

8. The mentoring teacher will evaluate the candidate. The Charlotte Danielson and Educator Disposition Assessment forms will be the tools used to accomplish this evaluation. The mentoring teacher will also verify the number of hours the candidate completed. These forms are sent directly to the mentoring teacher and returned to the Director of Field Experiences and Clinical Practice.

9. If you have volunteered to be a driver to a site,

a. be on time;
b. notify riders if you are unable to attend.

10. If you are a rider,

a. be ready and on time;
b. notify the driver if you are unable to attend;
c. be willing to help with gasoline.

11. Drivers and riders need to exchange phone numbers.

12. All hours for each candidate are logged in the School of Education Office.

13. Field Experience placements will be canceled if the candidate is found to be unprofessional or if other circumstances dictate such action.
