Admission to Professional Internship
Application for the professional internship (student teaching) must be made by the required deadline (May or December). Admission is contingent upon:
• Receipt of passing scores on the Illinois License Content Area test(s)**,
• Individuals must have a minimum grade point average of 2.75 in their combined Professional and Specialization coursework, and minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
• Successful completion of all required field experience hours and pre- internship clinical experience hours,
• A grade of “C-” or higher in all coursework required for licensure, and
• Approval by the COTE through a vote. (This committee has authority to terminate programs of candidates falling below standard).
(Note: a second criminal background check or other documentation may be required by the school district where student teaching will be completed).
**Student teacher candidates scheduled to student teach during the fall semester must successfully complete and have passing scores reported to the Greenville University School of Education for the Illinois License Testing Content Area Test by the August score report date in the given testing schedule. Failure to meet this date may result in the student teaching placement being postponed until the following semester.
**Student teacher candidates scheduled to student teach during the spring semester must successfully complete and have passing scores reported to the Greenville University School of Education for the Illinois License Testing Content Area Test by the December score report date in the given testing schedule. Failure to meet this date will result in the student teaching placement being postponed until the following semester.
The Professional Internship includes the following:
EDUC 400/505 – Early Experience: This experience takes place in the public schools or accredited private schools at the beginning of the fall public school term for a minimum of five days which includes the district institute day(s) and the first two student attendance days.
EDUC 401/581 Clinical Practice Elementary and EDUC 409/410 Clinical Practice Secondary taken the semester before student teaching, this general methods course is conducted with a major emphasis on actual clinical experiences that focus on the role of the elementary school teacher within the community, school, and classroom. As part of this clinical experience, students will complete a practice edTPA.
EDUC 482/582 Student Teaching Seminar. The seminar addresses professional topics within the field of education. In addition, the seminar provides an opportunity for teacher candidates to focus on the required performance assessment.
All candidates will complete their professional internship at a public or accredited private school.
Student Teaching Placement Cancellation Policy
If the School of Education finds it necessary to cancel the student teaching placement, the following dates and fees will apply:
Cancellation by:
February 1 = No Fee
February 2 – March 31 = $250.00
After April 1 = $600.00
The cancellation fee may be waived for emergency situations on a case-by-case basis by petition to the Director of Field Experience and Clinical Practice.
