Evocative Coaching

Faculty will be assigned an evocative coach if (1) they are new faculty members, or (2) they request assistance to improve some aspect of their teaching. Additionally, if a faculty member in discussion with the Dean of their school indicates a need of instructional improvement, they can mutually agree with the faculty member that an avenue towards success is to work with an evocative coach. Evocative Coaches are trained using the Center for School Transformation training materials for Evocative Coaching in combination with adaptations for higher education and Greenville University foundational documents. This approach serves to promote change through “creating relationships that foster and support the ongoing learning of women and men who show up every day to share their curiosity, knowledge, and spirits with students” (Tschannen-Moran & Tschannen-Moran, 2010). Evocative coaches do not impose change, but rather empower individuals to undergo their own transformation, which allows for an individualized approach that revolves around the strengths of the individual being coached. The process of evocative coaching is consistent with Greenville University themes of transformation, relationship, and strengths-based development. Evocative coaching relationships last for 1-2 years after which the faculty member joins a Faculty Learning Community.

Direct Supervisor: A direct supervisor may be a Department Head, Dean or an Associate Dean. In order to evaluate faculty, it is essential that all individuals in this role be provided with professional training in evaluating instruction which would be organized through HR. The process and evaluation tool used at Greenville University will be approved by the Faculty Review Committee and HR.
