Chair: Academic Department
GU strives to follow a Christ-like hierarchical structure. The university has established flat lines of communication between the President as the dean of faculty and instructors who action the university's mission and core values. The chair of each department is appointed by the President upon the recommendation of the Chief Academic Officer. The appointment is reviewed at least once every two years. Usually, a Department Chair is expected to have tenure. When a Department Chair is granted a leave of absence or sabbatical leave, an acting chair will be appointed until the chair on leave returns. The President reserves the right to terminate the appointment of any department chair.
Department Chairs report directly to the Chief Academic Officer, or designee within the Office of Academic Affairs. They are expected to work directly with the Office of Academic Affairs in determining the curriculum to be taught in the department and the teaching load of each faculty member under their jurisdiction. Department chairs are also expected to participate in hiring faculty members for their departments, work with Chief Academic Officer to develop budgets, and submit expense reports appropriately. A more comprehensive list of the duties of Department Chair is contained in the Department Chair’s Handbook.
