2.8.10 : Electrical Appliances

Any prohibited items discovered in rooms are subject to immediate seizure by the Department of Residence Life or the Department of Campus Safety.

·      Allowed Appliances: Clocks, diffusers, electric fans, floor lamps, shavers, Keurig, microwaves, mini fridge (no more than 4.4 cubic feet), stereo equipment, hair dryers, televisions, video games, and computer equipment. Curling Irons and irons are allowed provided they contain a safety shutoff and are utilized in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions for use.

·      Prohibited Appliances (Items may be allowed in public lounges or kitchen areas. Check with your RD): Any appliance with heating elements (Broilers, hot plates, toasters, toaster ovens, lava lamps, space heaters, air fryers, halogen lamps), in window air conditioners, George Foreman style grills, crock pots, electric skillets, rice cookers, hot pots, and any appliance which utilizes an open flame (camping stoves, etc).

All appliances as well as extension cords used must have the UL mark or label present on the package. Heavy-duty extension cords are required for distances of more than six feet. Large appliances such as microwaves and mini fridges must be plugged directly into a power outlet and may not be connected to a power strip or extension cord due to fire hazards. All power strips must have a minimum rating of ETL and a self-contained circuit breaker. “Daisy chaining” or connecting multiple power strips or extension cords together is prohibited. Extension cords should never be plugged directly into a power strip.

Appliances that would otherwise meet campus policy but are over ten years old are prohibited in residence halls. Any Christmas lights students utilize for decoration must be UL approved, fused, and in-line style. Christmas lights may not be placed on metal Christmas trees.
