EDUT 5332 Creating a Gender Inclusive Classroom for Young Learners

Creating a Gender Inclusive Classroom for Young Learners

Prepare to embark on a journey of discovery and understanding about how early childhood educators can support young children who are gender diverse, and their families. Census statistics illustrate that one or more children enrolled in early childhood and other school programs are gender expansive or LGBTQIA+. To create safe and affirming environments that break through the barriers beyond “blue is for boys,” and “pink is for girls,” you will explore ways you can make all students feel included and seen. Discover how gender-neutral language, gender-expansive books, and anti-bias curricula encourage inclusivity, and log your reflections and gender terminology on templates designed to capture your new knowledge. Audit your classroom for gender-expansive best practices and learn how stereotypes, implicit biases, and heteronormativity hold us back. Study gender diversity policies and position statements from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and others to guide adjustments to school policies and practices. Review a bounty of book lists, diverse curricula, and resources for families designed to build a bridge between gender and expectations.
