NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS: A NEW FRAMEWORK FOR AUTHENTIC SCIENCE INSTRUCTION
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are a new set of science educational standards that address needs in K-12 science education and guide its improvement based on A Framework for K-12 Science Education (National Research Council in 2012). The NGSS are aimed at improving science learning and engagement in the 21st century by incorporating authentic science and engineering practices, identifying crosscutting concepts that are fundamental to connecting knowledge across science and engineering, and establishing disciplinary core ideas that support students’ acquisition of new knowledge.

This course provides science teachers with an in-depth understanding of the Framework, including an understanding of learning progressions that describe how science learning occurs at increasingly sophisticated levels as students get older. This course includes strategies for translating the NGSS to classroom practices that engage students in authentic learning, and inspire all students to succeed in science. By the end of the course, the teacher will be able to make the shift to planning and teaching using the NGSS to improve student success in science.
