Tuition Benefit Program

 (Revised Effective July 1, 2015)

(Regular Full-Time Employees and Faculty)

Eligibility – Employees, their spouses, and their dependent children are eligible for consideration for the Greenville University (GU) tuition discount for classes offered by GU. Regular full-time employees must have at least one full year of service at GU to qualify for this program. Faculty employees qualify immediately for this program. Dependent children may be eligible for the benefit if they are dependents according to federal income tax guidelines, are unmarried, and under the age of 25, and/or meet Federal Student Aid standards. The student must be eligible for admission to GU.

Employees must complete and submit an Employee Tuition Discount at the time of application into the tuition benefit program and before the designated deadline date to be eligible for this benefit. As a prerequisite for consideration for the tuition benefit, the student is required to make timely and proper application for GU and outside scholarships and grants, and all state and federal grants and aids for which the student is eligible, including the FAFSA. With the exception of PELL/SEOG, any awards received from filing the FAFSA will be applied against tuition and will reduce the amount of the Tuition Discount. Government awards forfeited by late application filings will not be covered by the University. If the child marries during the semester, the waiver will continue for the remainder of the semester, but will not carry forward to subsequent semesters.

Tuition Only – The benefit applies to tuition charges only (and 50% of applied music fees). The tuition benefit will be calculated towards the balance of tuition charges after all scholarship and grant funds from all sources except PELL and SEOG funds have been applied to the student’s account. This discount does not apply towards off-campus, study abroad programs, or reciprocal tuition programs with other institutions.

Qualifying Tuition – Dependent children may only apply this discount towards traditional undergraduate tuition. Employees and their spouses may apply this discount towards traditional undergraduate tuition and graduate programs offered by GU. This benefit is limited to one bachelor degree and one graduate degree per person.

Taxation of Benefits – Tuition discount benefits will be taxed in accordance with all federal and state laws.

Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) Full-Time Service New regular full-time hires that were employed at a Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) institution immediately preceding employment at Greenville University will receive credit for each year of full-time service at cooperating CCCU institutions. This only applies to CCCU institutions that participate in the CCCU Tuition Waiver Exchange Program.

Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) Tuition Agreement – Traditional Undergraduate Program The CCCU has a tuition agreement with cooperating universities to grant tuition waivers to dependents of regular full-time employees and retirees. The conditions and lists of participating universities can be found at www.cccu.org. The application form for this program can be obtained in the Financial Aid Office.

CLEP Credit – Traditional Undergraduate Program The tuition benefit that applies to certain Greenville University employees and their dependents (see above schedule) will also cover the cost of receiving credit by exam (CLEP credit). This benefit applies only to the costs associated with receiving the University credit; it does not cover any costs associated with taking any CLEP test. Employees/dependents must cover the testing fees. Individuals seeking this credit are responsible for requesting the test and for actually receiving any credit that may be earned based on test results.

Example 1: An employee or their dependent takes the English CLEP test and earns a score high enough to justify the awarding of three hours of credit. The employee or dependent pay ETS, the test publisher, to take the exam. Any tuition benefit for which the employee or their dependent is otherwise eligible (based on the spouse and dependent children tuition discount schedule) may cover the cost of actually receiving the three hours of credit.

Example 2: An employee or their dependent takes a Math CLEP test and did not earn a score high enough to justify the awarding of any credit. The employee or dependent is nevertheless responsible to pay ETS for the cost of the test administration. The employee or dependent receives no tuition benefit because he/she did not earn credit based on the test score.

Retired Employees The Tuition Discount benefits will be applied with the same guidelines as are applicable to fulltime employees at the time a retiree chooses to use this benefit. In the event the retiree, spouse, or dependent children use this benefit, he/she will receive the same benefit as full-time employees under the then current Handbook.

Regular Part-Time, Temporary, and Student Employees No Tuition Discount Benefits are available.
