EDUA 5647 Preventing Youth Suicide
PREVENTING YOUTH SUICIDE
Take a moment to consider these startling statistics: Among 12- 18-year-olds, suicide is the second leading cause of death . More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, and influenza combined. Each day in our nation there are an average of over 5,400 attempts by teenagers in grades 7-12. Unquestionably, suicide is a major problem facing today’s youth.
The hopeful news is, four out of five teens who attempt suicide have given clear warning signs. The course discusses the causes and symptoms of teenage depression and the thought patterns that can lead a teen to feel there is no other way out. With the knowledge from this course, the teacher will be equipped with concrete, effective strategies for identifying and helping students at risk, saving lives in the process.
