EDUA 5738 Students w/ High Functioning Autism

TEACHING STUDENTS WITH HIGH FUNCTIONING AUTISM

The course is designed to familiarize teachers with the signs, symptoms, and implications of having students with High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in their classroom. After finishing the course, teachers will be able to describe and address the academic, social/emotional, and behavioral needs of students with high-functioning autism. They will also know how to successfully integrate a student with high-functioning autism into their classroom and work with their general education students to create a respectful, inclusive environment for high-functioning ASD students. Finally, they will learn how to partner with and support the parents of high-functioning ASD students in order to harness these students’ strengths, overcome their challenges, support their social/emotional and academic growth, and prepare them for transitions toward independence and their future.
