EDUA 5728 Teaching Poverty's Children
TEACHING POVERTY’S CHILDREN
All children come to school with the hope of achieving the same outcomes as their peers, and educators work to help students achieve this goal. But for students who come from families in poverty work against a host of short- and long-term consequences that make it challenging to achieve this goal. To teach poverty’s children, educators need to use research-based strategies for supporting students and helping them break poverty barriers.
This course helps teachers who are interested in better reaching students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. In addition to reviewing negative consequences of poverty, the course provides classroom strategies for designing learning activities that can help counteract these consequences. The course also suggests ways to engage families and community members in students’ education. Finally, the course examines key policies and programs that help ensure equitable education for all students.
