STAYING PRESENT: MINDFULNESS FOR BETTER TEACHING AND LEARNING
Mindfulness, a set of techniques that have been practiced for thousands of years, helps a person become “present” by calming the mind and increasing awareness of his or her body, thoughts, and emotions. This ability to stay present increases focus and attention, improves social and emotional skills, and even enhances physical health. Research has shown that implementing mindfulness in the classroom results in significant teaching and learning benefits. When teachers and students can relax, become thoughtful and centered, and better manage their emotions, they have more success both in and out of the classroom.
In this course, teachers will learn a set of robust strategies for implementing mindfulness techniques in the classroom. In just minutes a day, teachers and students can participate in exercises that help them center the body, mind, and spirit, and manage stressful moments. After finishing the course, teachers will have the tools needed to create an energized, interconnected, and kind classroom culture where every member is engaged, motivated, and passionate about learning and has the capacity to stay present even in stressful situations.
