EDUA 5839 Grading for Mastery

GRADING FOR MASTERY: GUIDING STUDENTS THROUGH THE LEARNING PROCESS

This course will examine the history and purposes of grading. The various types of assessments and their purposes will be discussed. Traditional grading and mastery grading will be compared and contrasted as will the use of Core Content Standard language as part of mastery grading. As part of this course, participants will be asked to reflect on their own beliefs about grading and its purposes. A core idea within mastery grading is that behaviors are to be separated from academics, so the impact of zeros, deductions for late submissions, homework completion, and test redos will be examined. Completion of the course will provide the know-how to implement mastery grading and provide a rationale for its use.
