EDUA 5120 Student Assessment in the Arts

CRAFTING STUDENT ASSESSMENT IN THE ARTS
Trying to fit art instruction and assessment into neat boxes is virtually impossible. Because there are so many different art-based disciplines in schools, traditional assessments like multiple choice and essays sometimes don’t work. In addition, what matters in the art classroom (e.g., instilling a love of art, creativity, experimentation, etc.) can’t always be measured. So, how can art teachers capture the learning that happens in their classrooms in a way that supports student growth?

In this course, you will learn about, evaluate, and create a variety of formative and summative art assessment strategies, including art journals, portfolios, integrated performances, and judging strategies. You will also learn techniques for evaluating your art curriculum to see if students are learning what you intended and where in your sequence of activities you can build opportunities for students to reflect on their experiences.
