EDUA 5371 Common Core Standards in Math K-5

THE COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS IN MATHEMATICS: CONNECTING CONTENT AND PRACTICE (K–5)
The Common Core State Standards in Math (CCSSM) outline what students should be able to demonstrate, both in terms of procedural fluency and conceptual understanding, at various grade levels. The Standards of Mathematical Practice (SMP) describe behaviors that educators should expect to develop as students become more mathematically proficient.

This course is designed to offer both experienced and new teachers the opportunity and motivation to gain a deep familiarity with the Common Core’s content and philosophy in elementary mathematics, including shifts in focus: goals of greater conceptual understanding, changes in what is expected in terms of procedural fluency, and an increased focused on flexible and creative problem-solving abilities. As the teacher moves through the course, he or she will be encouraged to connect the CCSSM and SMP to current classroom practices, and to develop or compile new activities and instructional plans aligned with these goals.
