EDUA 5350 Literacy Skills in Elem Math Class

SUPPORTING LITERACY SKILLS IN THE ELEMENTARY MATH CLASSROOM
Teaching mathematics in the elementary classroom is markedly different today than it was in the past. New expectations for students and new understandings about how they learn have necessitated changes in instructional practices. Today, we know that math must be developmentally appropriate and accessible for young students, and in the process of learning math content, they must also hone literacy skills, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening, as outlined in the Common Core State Standards and other state standards across the country. Math is no longer merely about being able to memorize and regurgitate basic facts, and applying algorithms to word problems. Instead, it is about developing mathematical habits of mind, including problem solving and critical thinking, and applying classroom learning to real-world contexts.

In this course, you’ll explore strategies for integrating literacy into your math instruction to support the meaningful engagement of 21st century learners. By the end of the course, you will be able to design and implement math instruction that fosters students’ 21st century skills and allows them to develop the Standards for Mathematical Practice, regardless of their learning needs.
