EDUA 5758 What, Why, How of Universal Design

THE WHAT, WHY, AND HOW OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING
Are you looking for ways to engage all students? Do you notice how students learn in different ways, but aren’t quite sure how to address all of their needs? Universal Design for Learning is a framework that can help you plan lessons that meet the needs of all of your students. Based on brain research, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) will help you meet the needs of diverse learners by planning lessons that consider the wide variability amongst learners. UDL consists of three key principles: engagement, representation, and action and expression. By considering each principle, you will be able to plan lessons that engage students in making sense of the information presented to them while expressing their knowledge in meaningful ways.

This course will introduce you to UDL by providing you with the brain research behind each of the principles. After gaining a clear understanding of each principle, you will apply your knowledge to determine how these principles can be incorporated in your practice to plan lessons that appeal to all learners. By the end of the course, you will know how to use UDL to implement your standards, meet your learning objectives, and support all students in your classroom.
