TEACHING POVERTY’S CHILDREN
All children come to school hoping to achieve the same outcomes as their peers. But students who come from impoverished families must work against a host of short and long-term challenges that make academic success difficult. Breaking the barriers of poverty requires focused, research-based strategies, and that is exactly what this course provides.
In this course, you will confront your own biases about poverty and identify where they come from. You will learn to recognize struggles unique to children in poverty and how to design learning activities that will counteract these struggles. You will explore how poverty impacts brain development and how classroom interventions can help these students access an equitable education. Because students in poverty involve parents in poverty, you will develop strategies to partner with students’ families. In addition, you will cultivate methods of developing social–emotional learning to help students learn about themselves and work effectively with others.
