EDUA 5737 Empowering with Educational Equity

EMPOWERING STUDENTS THROUGH EDUCATIONAL EQUITY

The classroom today is diverse. Students come from around the world and bring with them their unique cultures, perspective, and learning needs. So too, modern classrooms are filled with students of diverse learning and language needs. Understanding how to identify, understand, and accommodate all learners in a manner that is equitable and effective is key to developing an environment conducive to effective education. Many students today do not respond to the same educational techniques as students in the past, and because of this, sometimes fall through the cracks. To alleviate these difficulties and prepare students for future scholastic and social challenges and success, it is essential that schools take advantage of alternative pedagogical approaches that consider each students’ unique circumstances and learning needs to provide them with a safe educational environment to help them thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.  This course will focus on various factors that influence the social, emotional, mental, and academic development of students from diverse backgrounds. Learners will investigate strategies for extending the classroom, reaching out to parents and helping students develop a strong academic and social/emotional foundation. This course will also help in the learning how to develop and modify effective and meaningful instruction and activities that engage all students, meet their needs, and help prepare them for college and a career. This course will also focus on the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and will provide strategies and ideas for helping to develop content and pedagogy to help meet and fulfill the mandates in the legislation. Through this course, learners will be able to develop a strong sense of how to identify the learning needs of all students, what makes each learner unique, and the best manner by which to modify content to meet their needs.
