EDUA 5213 America's Wars: Civil War - Vietnam
AMERICA’S WARS: FROM THE CIVIL WAR TO VIETNAM
War – organized violence against an "enemy of the state" – is in many ways part and parcel of the American journey. As a nation founded by war when the colonists fought for and won independence from the British, Americans have started, supported, avoided, and ended many wars since 1776. In this course, the teacher will learn classroom strategies for teaching about the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
This course covers the major causes and events of each war, the key players, and how each war served as a turning point in American history and policy. The teacher will learn new perspectives on each war, develop complex debates, and create new strategies for teaching America’s wars. In addition, the teacher will read about antiwar protests throughout history in order to engage their students with the "flipside" of war. By the end of the course, the teacher will be equipped to teach about America’s wars in a high-interest, interactive, and engaging way that goes well beyond memorizing battle dates and political speeches.
