EDUA 5766 When Death Impacts School Community
WHEN DEATH IMPACTS YOUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY
Every year, thousands of children and teens in the United States experience the death of someone they know. Coping with a death can have profound emotional, behavioral, social, and academic impact on a child’s development. Teachers, who typically spend more time with students than anyone else but their families, are in a unique position to support a grieving student and help them work through their grief in healthy, effective ways.
This course introduces teachers to the nature and impact of grief on pre-adolescents and adolescents and provides ways for teachers to facilitate the grieving process. It covers both deaths that occur outside of the school environment as well as what happens when a member of the school community dies. After finishing the course, teachers will be equipped with a wide array of strategies for helping students move through the healing process and thrive despite their loss.
Note: This course does not cover school shootings or death due to other school-related violence.
