EDUA 5610 Teacher's Guide to HIV/AIDS
A TEACHER’S GUIDE TO HIV/AIDS
HIV/AIDS (Human-Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is one of the greatest public health threats in the world. The numbers are staggering; there are more than 70 million people infected worldwide. More than 30 million have already died, and every year almost 2 million more die from HIV/AIDS. HIV has found its way into every country in the world, every stratum of society, and does not discriminate by age, gender, ethnicity, or religion. More than 1.1 million people in the United States are living with HIV/AIDS, and almost 1 in 6 are unaware of their infection. The good news is that HIV is a preventable disease, which makes education and prevention strategies critical for American youth.
This course immerses the teacher in HIV/AIDS’ history, nature, myths, transmission paths, symptoms, and disease progression as well as testing/treatment options for people living with HIV/AIDS. Armed with this information, the teacher will develop educational and prevention strategies for the classroom and create an implementation plan for HIV/AIDS awareness education at his or her school.
