EDUA 5604 Dealing with the ADD/ADHD Child

DEALING WITH THE ADD/ADHD CHILD
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are the most commonly diagnosed neurobehavioral disorders in childhood, and these diagnoses are on the rise every year . These disorders can be debilitating to a student’s behavioral, emotional, social, and academic success and also pose stressors for teachers who may be unsure how to support ADD/ADHD students and foster their personal and academic success.

This course describes the characteristics of ADD/ADHD and their impact on children. The teacher will learn specific identification, intervention, and support strategies for a host of ADD/ADHD characteristics that interfere with a student’s academic and personal success. In addition, the teacher will recognize that teaching children with ADD/ADHD poses unique challenges, and learn how to cultivate a healthy mindset for best working with these students. After finishing the course, the teacher will be equipped with a robust set of best practices for helping ADD/ADHD students manage their behavior, improve their social skills, and succeed academically.
