PREPARING FOR INCLUSION
Teachers today face daily challenges of high workloads, budget cuts, and increasing class sizes. Under the current Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a main focus for education is the process of inclusion: creating classrooms with a mix of regular education and special education students. The challenge of working in an inclusive classroom puts further demands on teachers’ skills and time. Planning for students with diverse needs, collaborating with parents and outside professionals like aides or physical therapists, and juggling divergent teaching strategies are just some of the tasks required of teachers of inclusion classes.
This course aims to provide teachers with robust knowledge and effective practices for fostering academic and social success within the inclusion classroom. It also provides a perspective on how to harness inclusion so that all students are full, valued, and thriving members of their classroom.
