EDUA 5736 Rethinking Urban Education (K-5)
FROM THE INNER CITY TO THE IVY LEAGUE: RETHINKING URBAN EDUCATION (K-5)
What comes to mind when you hear the phrase, urban education? Do you, perhaps, think of schools in the inner-city? Or, do you think of low-income public schools? No matter how you define the term, we can agree that educators are not only responsible for the physical safety of their students, but also for creating an environment where their elementary students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
This course examines strategies for doing the aforementioned, even in classrooms or schools that are low-resourced. By the end of the course, you will be able to cultivate a learning environment that supports students’ academic and socioemotional development, design and implement instruction that meaningfully engages your students and their families, and adequately prepare students for 21st century opportunities.
