THE COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICS: CONNECTING THEORY AND PRACTICE, GRADES 9-12
The Common Core State Standards were designed to increase student achievement in mathematics, by creating a cohesive progression from Kindergarten through high school. The implementation of such a large and comprehensive process has left many high school mathematics teachers in the position of implementing policies that are not readily understood by the general public, teachers, administrators, students, and parents.

This course focuses on the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) and the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP) for grades 9 through 12. This course introduces the instructional shifts, or the changes outlined by the standards that need to be instituted in the implementation of the new standards, with strategies and tools to implement these shifts in the classroom. Throughout the course, the teacher will be presented with resources and best practices for integrating the CCSSM and SMP in order to promote mathematical thinking and prepare students for college and careers. The teacher will also gain practical strategies and tools to facilitate positive parent involvement and communication while alleviating the tension that often results from instructional and assessment shifts. Additionally, this course prepares the teacher to successfully reach students from varied cultural backgrounds, genders, ethnicities, interests, and skills.
