UNDERSTANDING DYSLEXIA
Students with the learning disabilities designated as dyslexia, dysgraphia, and oral and written language learning disability (OWL LD) are characterized by impaired abilities in oral language, reading, handwriting, spelling, and writing. Although many of these students struggle academically due to their disability, they also typically possess significant strengths and abilities, such as expansive creative abilities, that are often overlooked or misunderstood.
This course introduces the teacher to these conditions and their neurological basis and provides strategies to support these students socially and emotionally. By the end of the course, teachers will be know how to differentiate instruction in oral language, reading, and writing skills to both meet dyslexic and dysgraphic students’ needs and channel their strengths.
