TAPPED OUT: THE GLOBAL WATER CRISIS
A better name for Earth would be Water. 70% of Earth is covered in water, all life forms depend on water to survive, and many chemical reactions depend on water as a solvent. Unfortunately only 3% of Earth’s water is freshwater and viable for consumption. Over one billion people across the globe have inadequate access to clean water, which increases every day as the world’s population grows and pollution and climate change disrupt freshwater sources.
This course is designed to describe how climate change, the privatization of the water supply, international public policy, the bottled water industry, and technology are limiting equitable access to safe water. The course also profiles water activists around the world who work on water scarcity, and provide great real-world connections for the classroom. By the end of the course, the teacher will have strategies and classroom activities for teaching students about these complex issues, including how to help students profile countries and communities in crisis and help build awareness to help these communities.
