EDUA 5226 History of Great Britain

HISTORY OF GREAT BRITAIN: 18th CENTURY TO THE PRESENT
Students cannot be fully understand the history of Great Britain without a deep examination of British imperialism, the move from imperialism to nationalism in the mid-20th century, and the country’s unique cultural and societal norms. This course provides the teacher with an in-depth look at British history from the late 18th century to the present, from Great Britain’s loss of the American colonies through the height of the British Empire in the 19th and early 20th centuries to post-World War II British nationalism, politics, and culture.

This history course integrates ELA standards as the teacher designs history instruction that incorporates reading comprehension; speaking and listening exercises; and explanatory and argumentative writing skills to improve discipline literacy. The teacher will also learn how to use primary source documents and texts written from varying historical perspectives to bolster history instruction. After completing the course, the teacher will be equipped with an in-depth understanding of how centuries of British imperialism shaped 20th century British politics and society.
