THE COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS IN MATH: CONNECTING CONTENT AND PRACTICE (GRADES 6-8)
The Common Core State Standards in Math (CCSSM) outline what students need to know, understand, and be able to do in order to prepare for college and careers. The Standards explain what to teach but they do not describe how to teach. The focus of this course is on clarifying the "how" by looking at best teaching practices in middle school mathematics and connecting content standards to the Standards of Mathematical Practice (SMP) from the CCSSM.
This course is designed to offer both experienced and new teachers the opportunity and motivation to gain a deep familiarity with the Common Core’s content and philosophy in middle school mathematics. This includes shifts in focus, coherence, fluency, application and deep understanding that prepare students well for the demands of high school in the age of Common Core. As the teacher moves through the course, he or she will be encouraged to connect the CCSSM to both current classroom practice and past experiences as an elementary or middle school math student. By the end of the course, the teacher will have materials and resources that support teens in their efforts to become college and career ready.
