TEACHING POVERTY’S CHILDREN
Today, the disparity between poor and middle class American families is greater than ever. The impacts of poverty on children are vast and harmful, particularly when coupled with a lack of adequate support from caring, involved adults. Socially, emotionally, cognitively, and physically, these children suffer – perpetuating a form of generational poverty where relatively few children are able to break the cycle and rise above their circumstances.
In this course, the teacher will learn about the nature, causes, and effects of poverty, and how to identify the individual challenges students face as well as their strengths and inner resources to increase individualized support. After finishing the course, teachers will be equipped with a robust and effective set of strategies for helping students of lower socioeconomic status succeed in the classroom and beyond.
