EDUA 5738 Teaching Students: Austism Spectrum
TEACHING STUDENTS WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER
The course is designed to familiarize teachers with the signs, symptoms, and implications of having students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in their classroom. The course discusses both the challenges and opportunities associated with teaching students with ASD, and equips teachers with a comprehensive set of skills and strategies for identifying, supporting, and designing effective instruction for these students. Teachers will learn how to work with outside professionals and paraprofessionals to support ASD students in the classroom, as well as resources the teacher can seek out for additional assistance.
After finishing the course, teachers will be able to address the academic, social/emotional, and behavioral needs of students with ASD. They will also know how to successfully integrate a student with ASD into their classroom and work with their general education students to create a respectful, inclusive environment for ASD students. Finally, they will learn how to partner with and support the parents of ASD students in order to harness these students’ strengths, overcome their challenges, and support their social/emotional and academic growth.
